Honoring Our Military Heroes On Memorial Day

Memorial Day is the unofficial beginning of summer. Nearly 40% of Americans travel over the long holiday weekend. While we at Forever Houseboats love the promise of hot temperatures and great grilling that every Memorial Day brings, we never forget the true point of this holiday. That is why we are proud to honor the Americans who have given their lives in service of our great nation.

History of Memorial Day

Memorial Day was established as a federal holiday in 1967. However, the practice and tradition of honoring our fallen military service members at the end of May began in the United States after the Civil War. On May 30, 1868, General James Garfield traveled to Arlington National Cemetery to make a speech in remembrance of the Union and Confederate soldiers who had died in the Civil War. More than 5,000 participants decorated 20,000 graves that day.

Observing Memorial Day Today

Over 42 million Americans have served in the United States Military during wartime. Of these brave heroes, more than 1.3 million have given their life during conflict. In observation of these sacrifices, all across the country, Americans will decorate graves, gather with family, and celebrate the freedom we share this Memorial Day. The National Moment of Remembrance is held at 3:00 PM every Memorial Day. We invite you to consider participating in this solemn moment on the water if you have rented a houseboat for the holiday weekend.
